Burckle Crater is an underwater crater located in the southern Indian Ocean, about 2,200 kilometers southwest of Australia. It was first discovered in 2006 by a team of American and South African scientists who were studying the sea floor using sonar equipment.
The crater is about 29 kilometers wide and 300 meters deep, and is believed to have been formed by a meteorite impact around 5,000 to 10,000 years ago. The impact would have caused massive tsunamis that would have affected coastlines thousands of kilometers away.
The discovery of the Burckle Crater has shed new light on the frequency of meteorite impacts and the potential impact on human civilization. It has also provided scientists with a rare opportunity to study the effects of a relatively recent impact event on the ocean floor.
